Plants in paintings: Untitled

I think we’ve found evidence that it isn’t just dogs and their owners that can look alike…

In Ian McKenzie Smith’s work from 1956 (when the artist was just 21), we have a rather lanky gentleman in his underwear looking more than a little like the gangly spider plant on the chair next to him.

This isn’t typical of McKenzie Smith’s work overall – he is known for his ‘distinctly personal brand of landscape based abstraction’.  He ran Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums for almost 30 years (1968-1996).
